Felt Vessel Project 2012 - Part 3 of 3

The Felt Store has been presenting the Vessel Project winners of the Dec 404 Interior Decorating Class at Humber College. The project is in collaboration with professor Susan Schwartz and her students. This week we are featuring some Honourable Mentions!

Kristina Krmelj, “Oversized Coral Clutch”
Honourable Mention

The Oversized Coral Clutch is truly stunning. Using a tabby weave, Kristina intricately worked the felt into this trendy and modern clutch. Using food dye, Kristina was able to get this lovely coral colour which is on point for the spring fashion season. The Oversized Coral Clutch features a large compartment and latch closure.

Materials Used:
Remnant Felt
Metal Latch

Vu Bui, “Felt Lamp Shade”
Honourable Mention

What is wonderful about this project is the variety of concepts and execution. Vu was able to take the felt and form it into this sculptural lamp shade that oozes modern cool. The subtle curves of the felt create lightly texture contours that reflect the light inside. As mentioned in a previous post, 100% Wool Felt is an excellent material to use for lighting due to its flame retardant properties, and the varying layers of transparency give the lamp an extra dimension when lit.

Materials Used:
Remnant Felt
Light Bulb

Nadezhda Kachurina, “iPad Messenger Bag”
Honourable Mention

What we really enjoyed about the projects this year is the change of the vessels to fit today's technology. Nadezhda designed an iPad Messenger Bag that is not just about function but style. Nadezhda was able to convey the aesthetics of Chanel in the chain strap and her own modern take on how we can carry our favourite media devices. This iPad Messenger Bag is a great way to show that we are not limited to one style of case.

Materials Used:
Remnant Felt

Alejandro Garduno, “Messenger Bag”
Honourable Mention

This Messenger Bag, designed and constructed by Alejandro is a sophisticated and luxurious bag perfect for the business man or woman of today. The woven pattern of the bag adds a character that we do not often see in the traditional messenger bag. The juxtaposition of the natural grey felt and the brown leather and bronze hardware shows true care and style. This bag features a lined compartment and an adjustable strap.

The Goldfish Lamp lights up any space. The design is inspired by traditional Japanese fish ponds and folk art as well as the famous book, The Rainbow Fish by Markus Pfister. The goldfish is made out of felt dyed with food dye, and is cut to size using a cardboard template. Gauzy fabric made of polyester/cotton blends are used to enhance the light filtering through the scale cut-outs and the eyes, these fabrics are white and shimmery, producing a silvery water effect. 100% Wool Felt is an excellent material to use for lighting due to its flame retardant properties, and the varying layers of transparency give the lamp an extra dimension when lit. The choice of orange felt casts a warm light, creating a pleasant ambience.

The Vessel Project 2012 - Part 1 of 3

The Felt Store is pleased to present the 2012 Vessel project winners of the graduating Dec 404 Interior Decorating Class at the Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning. The Vessel project is run by professor Susan Schwartz and encourages students to explore the possibilities of felt in new and creative ways. The requirements of the course were to create a type of vessel – a hollow utensil or container - out of felt provided by The Felt Store. The projects were judged by the students and we will be showcasing the winners and a few honourable mentions in the upcoming weeks. Thank you to all of those involved in the making of this project and congratulations to Susan Schwartz and her students for their hard work and creative inspiration!

Anne Barros, “Origami Purse”
1st Place Winner DEC 404.01

The origami purse is a fantastic example of the ingenuity of felt. Anne has taken the material and formed it into a sculptural purse that can be dressed up or worn everyday. Anne worked with the felt to form a purse that is both functional and beautiful. The Origami Purse features several pockets and a cross body strap.

The Multi Vintage Bag is not only beautiful, it is also multi-functional by combining bag and backpack into one. Most multi-functional bags tend to only have one strap, but the Multi Vintage Bag is set apart by its’ intricate woven design and use of two straps. The straps can easily be switched from each side, transforming it from a reusable grocery bag to a comfortable backpack. It also includes a side pocket for carrying a water bottle.
