Like felt, cork is a renewable resource and is constantly being rediscovered in the home, workplace and other venues. It is a warm and light material that is made out of bark from cork trees; making it unique because cork bark can be harvested while allowing new bark to grow in its place without killing or damaging the trees. Heidi Roth has been with TFS since the beginning and has been a vital help to the widening of our Felt horizons. Heidi and her husband originate from Stuttgart, Germany and have worked internationally travelling as far as Tunisia, Romania and now Canada. While Heidi has a background in Tailoring, her husband is a mechanical technician for industrial textiles- providing her with a unique perspective on the production process behind the materials that she works with. Heidi was introduced to felt back in 2008, and now shares with us her fascination with the material.

"I am a person that loves to work with her hands, to watch the process of something coming together through the combining of pieces, textures and colours. Felt is one of those textiles that is so versatile, it is interesting to watch it grow into a new product. In a way felt really is, "naturally stylish": placing a colourful table runner onto a plain table can give a whole new warmth and comfortable look to a dining room. Also the combination of felt with other materials can create a variety of interesting looks. Personally, I really enjoy the natural qualities of the industrial felt. It works specifically well in combination with the bright high quality designer felts that we offer. There is something about the roughness of the fibres, and the bits of recycled wool that I like. It's like having a house where everything is perfect: that bothers me. I also like old furniture: the combination of something fine, rich with something old and historic, something that has a story. Felt, especially the industrial, has this same quality."

The Felt Vessel - "Felt Purse"

This is our final feature for The Vessel Project. What a great experience it has been to collaborate with Susan Schwartz and the DEC 404 Interior Design class of 2011. We hope that the variety of work and ideas has inspired you to work on your own felt vessel or other felt project. So let us wrap things up with Trang Nquyen's "Felt Purse", a recent graduate from Humber College!

What is really impressive about this purse is the collaboration of felt with different materials such as leather and wood. How great is it to see the natural materials working with each other to produce this wonderful purse! Keeping with the natural theme of the materials, Trang cut out a the silhouette of a tree utilising both sides of the leather. This adds great texture and contrast to the purse. The earth tones in the leather and wood are succesfully paired with this natural white remnant felt. The Felt Purse shows true character and Trang's personal aesthetic, which we here at The Felt Store love to encourage!

The Vessel Project - "Felt Sculptural Vase Holder"

What better way to start off the week than with another spectacular creation from a recent graduate from Humber College. Here is Melanie Macewen Dias and her Felt Sculptural Vase Holder.

This sculptural vase holder reminds us of the "Column" (1967 - 1968) by Ulysse Comtois (1931 - 1999). The interactive sculpture commissioned in 1968 can be seen in the National Gallery of Canada in the Garden Court. Like Comtois's "Column", Melanie has designed an interactive sculpture that allows you to manipulate the shape as you please. Using our remnant felt, she successfully cut individual pieces to size and arranged them in a stacked manner that could easily be manipulate to a variety of forms around your vase. The vase holder can be kept straight and in line or twisted to create lines that form a smooth curve or an irratic display of texture. This is truly a stimulating twist on the conventional thoughts of a vessel.

The Vessel Project - "Wine Bottle Holder"

It is Friday everyone! What better way to start off your weekend that a little inspiration from The Vessel Project. Today we have a truly unique take on the wine bottle holder from Jacqueline Pernia, a recent graduate from Humber College!

Pop open a bottle of wine this weekend and put it in this contemporary approach to a wine bottle holder. What a fantastic way to work with the remnant felt materials. Taking a few scrap strips, Jacqueline figured out how to weave the felt strips together to create this really great vessel. Talk about an exciting twist on the traditional wine bottle holder! This vessel can also be used when the bottle is standing up as a drip stopper and can be configured in different ways depending on the sculptural result that you are looking for. We love the simple concept of this wine bottle holder and hope that it inspires everyone this weekend that anything can be done with felt!

The Vessel Project - "Felt Tool Belt"

This Vessel Project is the "Felt Tool Belt". What a great concept and twist on what our felt can do! Dwight Lowe, a recent graduate from Humber College developed this concept that really surprised us.

Do-it-yourself, craftsmen, handymen or women, this is the perfect companion for all your tools, bits and bobs for while you are working around the house or on the job. Dwight Lowe used our remnant felt in an unexpected way to make this neat tool belt. It features several compartments for your hammer, tape measure, screws, gloves and most importantly your beverage of choice! The Tool Belt can be strapped onto your belt with handy loops at the back and when not in use it can be flatpacked away. A vessel that can keep your tools close at hand and organized this is a fully functional toolbelt that is made from felt.

The Vessel Project - "3-Way-Bag"

This is a contemporary take on a felt bag by Neda Bina, a recent graduate from Humber College, and another student involved in The Vessel Project!

Neda has created a truly versatile bag from our scrap felt. Using a little bit of creativity and intuition she has created a bag for everyone and all of the things we carry. This bag features three front pockets divided by the different coloured felt. It includes an additional and detachable cell phone pocket within the bag and an interchangeable strap. This strap is adjustable for use as a handbag, a messenger bag or a backpack! We are truly impressed by the ingenuity and execution of this vessel. This bag is functional and naturally stylish. The Vessel Project - "Wine Holder"

The Vessel Project continues with another student feature. This time from, Telma Ferreira, a recent graduate from Humber College, with her fantastic wine rack! Rack ‘em and stack ‘em! This duo-tone wine rack is perfect for your favourite bottles of vino. We are starting to see lots of felt wine racks out there but Telma takes the concept a few steps further by implementing the idea of symmetry with the shape of her wine rack and the double hand-stitched details which add to the structure of the vessel as well as an aesthetically pleasing contoured shape and contrast of colour. This wine rack is a contemporary view on a traditional vessel that is naturally stylish! Don’t hide your bottles of wine, Telma shows them off in her naturally stylish wine rack, perfect for display. Lay the wine rack down or have it stand upright, no matter what your wine bottles will safely be tucked into this beautiful vessel.

The Vessel Project - "Pillbox Hat"

What is great about The Vessel Project is that we get to see a variety of concepts executed from the same brief. This project is a wonderful way to see how different designers interpret a project and how we can use felt in a variety of ways! This feature is from the recent graduate from Humber College, Kathryn Sturino with her felt hat.

Does the head hold the hat, or does the hat hold the head? This vessel attempts to bring the question to mind! Felt is a commonly used material in the creation of hats and headpieces. We were really impressed that Kathryn went through these great lengths to manipulate the felt to meet her needs. It just shows the extraordinary possibilities that can be done with a little imagination when using felt. A lengthy process of steaming and stretching was used in order to create the “pillbox” shape. Kool-Aid drink mix was used to dye the purple felt pieces (This is successful with felt that has a very high wool content). After testing many methods of folding the felt and cutting different shapes for the decals Kathryn used circles so the design may remain simple yet intriguing by layering various sizes of the circles. Once dried and hardened, a puffed piece of tulle was added to create height and to add a bit of “cheekiness”. Kathryn’s pillbox hat, like all of her design work, makes an attempt to find a sense of whimsy and delight in things which may seem simple and uncomplicated. It is great to see Kathryn’s personality and experimentation in this Pillbox Felt Hat!

The Vessel Project - "Pip Squeek"

Here is another featured project from Susan Schwartz’s DEC 404 – Interior Decorating Class 2011 (Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, School of Applied Technology), Kristy Canning. Kristy Canning is, a recent graduate from Humber College, here is her vessel, “Pip Squeek.”

Kristy wanted to create something practical and simple. She decided to make a laptop case because it would be something that could be used on a regular basis. What a wonderful idea! She chose out of the remnants an industrial felt and a designer felt, which proved to be a winning colour combination! The vessel was hand sewn together and keeps closed using an oversized button. This laptop sleeve also has a neat front pocket that can hold a few additional supplies as well as a small mouse! As Kristy describes, “…just something for fun!”This is definitely an item that can be used everyday, which we love when we see our felt put to great use!

The Vessel Project

The Felt Store is always interested to see what can be done with our felt. We recently had the pleasure of working with Susan Schwartz, a professor at Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, School of Applied Technology – Interior Decorating and the students of DEC 404 – Interior Decorating Class 2011. The Felt Store provided some of our remnant felt for the challenge of creating a “Vessel” from our felt. We were pleasantly surprised to see the results of the “Vessel Project”, which we would like to share with everyone! In the weeks to come we will be showcasing some of the vessels created by the students. We would like to thank Humber College and Susan Schwartz for allowing us to work with the College and program on this fantastic project. We would also like to thank all of the students for participating and generously providing images and information regarding their project. Congratulations to all of the students on a job well done!

Our first feature is on Carla Davidson, a recent graduate from Humber College, here is her vessel, “The Running Felt.”

Carla Davidson seemed to have a load of fun making this project. The Running Felt was made with kids in mind, taking an iconic shoe and making it into a vessel for odds and ends such as shoe laces, pens, pencils, or any small knick knacks or doo dads that kids always seem to have. This is an ideal vessel for kids rooms, nurseries, day cares or as props in productions or in stores! It serves both a utilitarian purpose while adding a vibrant pop of colour and spunk, perfect for kids of any age!

Have you ever wondered how felt is made? In 2009 Cooper-Hewitt held an exhibition, "Fashioning Felt" exploring the history of felt and the versatility of the textile. The exhibition looked at felt as a contemporary textile and how it is used today in product design, architecture, fashion and industrial design. Fashioning Felt 2009- Fantastic Felt Finds

This chair was designed by Louise Campbell, and is manufactured by Hay. Designed in Denmark, 2001.

We came across this fantastic felt chair in the Fashioning Felt catalog from the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in New York. Felt is obviously a very versatile material, and can be used for a variety of things- wall coverings, chairs, stools, and just about anything else. The possibilities of felt are endless!!
